Overview
Visit Zenkoji Temple, a National Treasure that has attracted worshippers for centuries and enshrines what is believed to be Japan’s oldest Buddhist statue. Its majestic, serene atmosphere offers a peaceful moment. Then stroll along Zenkoji Nakamise Street, where you can sample local favourites such as sweets made with Shinshu apples and chestnuts, miso buns, oyaki dumplings, Shinshu soba and shichimi spice. Continue to Matsumoto Castle, a National Treasure with Japan’s oldest surviving five-tiered, six-storey castle keep. The castle retains much of its original appearance, while the surrounding area preserves the atmosphere of an old castle town.
