Walking through the National Gallery, you can see them everywhere: ancient goddesses; saints and virgins with children; muses; sweet and loving mothers, symbols of an ideal; damsels in distress... Women as subjects of representation are painted from every angle, but in a limited number of well-defined roles that seem to repeat themselves endlessly. And yet, women are the biggest absentees from the National Gallery. Of the 2,300 paintings in the great London museum, only twenty are by women artists!
